This is the documentation for the Search Files 1.0 application.
Search Files looks for strings in files on your hard disk. The dialog box it displays when you start it allows you to specify the string to search for, the folder to search in, whether to ignore case, and whether to search only in TEXT files. Use the Search In... button to select the folder you want to search. Search Files will look in all files in the folder you designate, as well as files in sub-folders. You can start the search by clicking on the Search button, or by pressing return. You can stop a search by clicking on the Stop button, or holding down the apple key and pressing period. Each time it finds your string in a file, Search Files displays the file name and the surrounding text in the results field ( the large scrolling rectangle). If you click on one of the lines in that field and select the Get Info item under the File menu, Search Files will display the folders you need to open to find the file.
You can save the results of a search to a TEXT file with the Save Results menu item. You can open up more search windows with the New menu item.
If you are running System 7 and you double-click on one of the lines in the results field, Search Files will start up the indicated file's application and cause it to open the file. You may wish to copy Search Files into the Apple Menu Items folder in your system folder.
Future versions will support regular expressions and be better integrated with System 7.
